The state of Louisiana is suing Roblox Corporation, claiming the company’s platform facilitates “the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana’s children.”
The lawsuit was announced during a press conference (and in an X post) by Louisiana attorney general Liz Murrill, who filed the suit in the 21st Judicial District on August 14, 2025.
During the press conference (and in an accompanying statement), the attorney general accused Roblox Corporation of choosing “profits over child safety.”
“It’s basically open season for sex predators on this app,” she said during the press conference. “Roblox is violating Louisiana law, and that’s why we’ve filed this lawsuit.”
According to the lawsuit, the State of Louisiana aims to hold Roblox Corporation “accountable” for “the facilitation and distribution of child sexual abuse material and for the sexual exploitation of Louisiana’s minor children” through Roblox.
The state is seeking to prohibit Roblox Corporation from “engaging in any activity in violation of [the] Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act,” and “representing that Roblox has adequate safety features,” alongside additional civil penalties and damages, attorney’s fees, and restitution to the State of Louisiana.
The suit claims that while Roblox Corporation “repeatedly assures parents, children, and the
public at large that Roblox is safe for children,” the company “fails to implement basic safety controls to protect child users and fails to provide notice of the dangers of Roblox.”
In particular, the suit highlights that, while “children are to have parental permission before signing up” for a Roblox account, the platform “does not have any safety features in place to prevent children from creating their own accounts and playing.”
The attorney general claims in the suit that Roblox “does nothing to confirm or document that parental permission has been given, no matter how young a child is.” Nor does the platform “require a parent to confirm the age given when a child signs up to use Roblox.”
“[For] years, Defendant has knowingly enabled and facilitated the systemic sexual exploitation and abuse of children [across] the United States, including in Louisiana,” the suit claims.
“Through willful disregard and deceptive practices, Defendant has permitted and perpetuated an online environment in which child predators thrive, directly contributing to the widespread victimization of minor children in Louisiana.”
On August 15, 2025, Roblox Corporation issued a statement addressing “erroneous claims and misconceptions” about its platform, commitment to safety, and “overall safety track record.”
“Every day, tens of millions of people around the world use Roblox to learn STEM skills, play, and imagine, and have a safe experience on our platform,” Roblox Corporation said in the statement.
“Any assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is simply untrue. No system is perfect, and bad actors adapt to evade detection, including efforts to take users to other platforms, where safety standards and moderation practices may differ.
“We continuously work to block those efforts and to enhance our moderation approaches to promote a safe and enjoyable environment for all users.”
The lengthy statement then goes on to highlight the 40 new parental and safety tools the company has implemented over the last year, and the features the platform already has built in, such as “rigorous text chat filters” and the inability for players under 13 to directly message others outside game experiences.
The company said it takes “swift action (typically within minutes)” to address “violative material,” and “accounts are removed through AI scans, user flags, and proactive monitoring, with a dedicated team focused on enforcement and swift removal.”
“Our Community Standards set clear expectations for how to behave on Roblox and define Restricted Experiences,” the statement reads. “We have both advanced AI models together with a large, expertly trained team with thousands of members dedicated to protecting our users and monitoring 24/7 for inappropriate content.”
“We aim to create one of the safest online environments for users, a goal not only core to our founding values but contrary to certain assertions, one we believe is critical to our long-term vision and success,” the statement continues.
“We understand there is always more work to be done, and we are committed to making Roblox a safe and positive environment for all users.”
